To help Gatorade regain marketshare, Loka creates an app that not only makes big data incredibly useful, but also visually stunning.

The goal

Gatorade is probably the most-recognized sports drink in the world. Yet in the late 2000s, the brand’s marketshare had plummeted, as competitors edged their way into greater visibility and connected with modern consumer expectations. Under its parent company PepsiCo, Gatorade needed a solution to unlock insights and determine trends from internal data sources and across online campaigns and the vast landscape of social media. Gatorade’s goal was to gain a deeper understanding of its customers and enhance its marketing strategy to stay ahead of the cultural conversation, better target customer needs and ultimately regain revenue and marketshare.

The challenge

Given Gatorade’s ubiquitous presence among professional and amateur athletes and at sporting events worldwide, it was no surprise that the brand’s consumer data was all over the place. The brand needed a solution that could process information from a vast array of sources, including millions of athletes and influencers, gather actionable insights into website, campaign and social media performance and present it all to executives in a form that’s easily accessible and beautiful to look at.

The solution

Loka worked closely with Gatorade to develop an executive dashboard app that processed data from Adobe Analytics, Twitter and Instagram. Named Mission Control, the dashboard provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface that enabled Gatorade executives to access real-time insights and trends through a visually stunning interface. With Mission Control, executives and communications officers can target specific online conversations to engage in—or to avoid. And it includes advanced features like trend analysis and predictive modeling to help Gatorade make better data-driven decisions across all its verticals.

What we delivered

Loka’s executive dashboard app includes:

  • Data processing from multiple sources, including Adobe Analytics, Twitter and Instagram
  • User interface design that leverages data visualization techniques to provide meaningful insights
  • Trend analysis and predictive modeling allow executives to spot emerging patterns in customer behavior, market shifts and other factors and make better decisions based on incoming data.

The results

Loka’s Mission Control app gave Gatorade’s communications and social media managers a 30,000-foot view of the brand landscape, including relevant commentary, feedback and placement opportunities. The company not only gained revenue, it gained status within the sports drink world it pioneered.

10% sales boost

After three consecutive years of slumped sales, Gatorade's US volume sales grew 10% in the second quarter of 2010. This was driven largely by the brand’s investments in the social media space via Gatorade's Mission Control.

$1 million of leveraged gain in only a year

Loka delivered an executive dashboard that’s actively used not only by Gatorade but by other PepsiCo brands and Fortune 500 companies as well. Combined, Mission Control delivered more than $1 million of leveraged gain for these adopters within the first year of deployment.
